The World Wide Web Consortium currently has information about level 1.0, 2.0 SMIL at its Web site. The linked site gives extensive technical information about SMIL.
Realnetworks
Realnetworks provides both the Realplayer and the RealSlideshow. The former is a SMIL player, and the latter is an authoring environment for SMIL slide shows. The player is very good, but the slide show is suited only to simple presentations.
Macromedia
Macromedia has included SMIL authoring in FLASH. But Flash movies must be published as Flash 4 to use SMIL features. Flash is a very advanced multimedia authoring environment, so the involvement of Macromedia is significant to SMIL.
Microsoft
Microsoft has included a SMIL player in IE (Internet Explorer) 5.5 and IE 6. When I installed IE 5.5 I lost all .wav playing sound on two computers. So be careful with IE 5.5. I have not tried IE 6. Not all SMIL features are implemented in IE 6.
